What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they feel less overwhelming. It uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, while you briefly focus on a memory. You don't have to describe every detail of what happened. Read our guide to EMDR.

Not everyone is ready for EMDR right away. Your therapist may start with grounding and stabilization skills, or use trauma-focused CBT or Prolonged Exposure therapy instead.

How many EMDR sessions will I need?

It depends on the type of trauma. A single-incident trauma may need fewer sessions than complex or childhood trauma. Your therapist will give you an idea after your first few sessions.

Can EMDR be done online?

Is EMDR covered by insurance?

Usually, when provided by a registered or provisional psychologist. We direct bill several insurers, auto insurers and VAC.
